Coaches Of Underperforming Athletes Face The Boot

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 (Bernama) -- Senior coaches of athletes who failed to deliver gold medals or perform satisfactorily at the Laos SEA Games are expected to be given the boot.

The Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) Deputy President Karim Ibrahim said full time athletics coaches under the payroll of the National Sports Council (NSC), may find their contracts terminated for failure to deliver results.

Karim said there were coaches who despite being employed for 13 years, had failed to produce athletes who can win gold medals at even the SEA Games level.

"The SEA Games is the lowest rated multi-sport games in the region and if the coaches cannot produce a medal prospect, that means the coach is not capable or inefficient," Karim who is also the MAAU Coaching and Development committee chairman told Bernama here Thursday.

The standard of the SEA Games has so little bearing among the major games, that even the Youth and Sports minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had suggested that back up athletes should be send for SEA Games.

He said there are 10 full time national coaches under NSC, namely Hanafiah Nasir (hurdles), Harun Rasheed (sprints), K. Jayabalan (400m), Alforo (high jump), Vladimir Hristiv Simenov (400m, 4x400m), S. Muthiah (long distance), Lou Cwee Peng (high jump), Mohd Nazar Abdul Rahim (throws), Frantisek Petrovic (throws) and Mohd Mansahar Abd Jalil (pole vault).

Karim said the MAAU had also drafted a blueprint, outlining a 10-year development programme (2009-2019), aimed at producing athletes who can win medals, especially in jump events.

"On average, athletes who jumped a distance of 8.0m to 8.4m in the long jump event were able to win a bronze medal at the Olympics while high jumpers who cleared an average height of 2.30m to 2.35m were able to emerge with a bronze medal.

"The national long jump record held by Josbert Tinus stands at 7.88m while Lee Hup Wei's high jump record is 2.27m. Based on these statistics, the performances of our athletes are no far from the mark. If we can tune them up with better techniques, I'm sure they can go further," he said.

He added that the blueprint would be submitted to the NSC soon.
