Kota Kinabalu: Promising fencer Ledi Boyd S. Malibun has put himself through extra hard work in training to achieve his target of qualifying for the Laos SEA Games scheduled to be held later this year.
The 17-year-old's immediate target however is the Singapore Open to be held in July and he is hoping for a good showing to impress the national body.
The youngster who hails from Inanam has been training daily together with other fencers at the Likas Fencing gymnasium under the guidance of State foil coach Bobby Chiw. The coach when contacted by Express Sports rated the youngster highly and considered him as highly potential in the arena of fencing especially in the foil discipline.
He said Ledi has a bright future if he can maintain the right attitude which is very important in the fencing world and he also disclosed that Ledi is currently following his training program in preparation for the Singapore meet which is emphasising more on the area of creativeness.
"He has sufficient skills but it is on the application of skills that he needs to improve and we are working closely to achieve that," said Bobby.
Bobby also said more exposure is needed for Ledi to become a better fencer and that is the main reason the association is sending him to Singapore.
The Singapore Open will be his second appearance at the international scene. Last year, prior to the Sukma Games, he competed for the Sabah team in the Hong Kong Open and managed to finish in the top 20 position in both foil and sabre disciplines.
This year he had won a gold medal in the foil individual event at the UMS Fencing Open Championship which was held recently.
At the last Sukma held in Terengganu he helped the State foil team grab a gold medal by beating favourites Selangor in the final. Ledi also won bronze medals in the individual sabre and team sabre events.
Ledi told Express Sports that he first took an interest in the sport after joining the school fencing club five years ago and after that there was no turning back for him.
