Kim Swee led the football team to the gold medal in 2011 in Jakarta.
PETALING JAYA: National Under-23 coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee’s fate will be known next month.
FA of Malaysia (FAM) secretary general Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said the national team management committee will meet next month to conduct a post-mortem on the Malaysian team’s failure at the SEA Games in Singapore.
Malaysia have only a mathematical chance of qualifying for the semi-finals after suffering back-to-back losses to Vietnam (5-1) and defending champions Thailand (1-0). Malaysia beat Timor Leste 1-0 in their opening match.
Hamidin said that FAM president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has asked for a detailed report on the team’s showing in Singapore.
“I’ve been informed by the FAM president to meet by July, the earliest, to conduct a post-mortem on the Under-23 squad’s outing in Singapore. We’ll also get cracking with our plans for the next Games which we will host in 2017,” said Hamidin.
Malaysia won back-to-back gold medals in Laos (2009) and Jakarta (2011). Datuk K. Rajagopal took the national Under-23 team to victory in Laos while Kim Swee led them to success in Jakarta.
In Myanmar two years ago, the team under Kim Swee lost to Indonesia on penalties in the semi-finals.
