KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) wants all sports associations sending athletes to the SEA Games in Laos in early December to be realistic in their medal targets instead of being ambitious.
NSC Director-General Datuk Zolkples Embong said they must gauge the actual capability of the athletes based on current performance and should not be too dependent on the athlete's ranking.
"Don't let the NSC set a target that is more realistic than theirs," he told reporters, here Monday.
Zolkples said the NSC had so far set a target of 31 gold medals including from taekwondo which had yet to decide its participation because of the internal problems faced by the Malaysian Taekwondo Association.
"However, the figure may change if there are athletes who are injured in the near future," he said.
He hoped that all sports associations took note of the conditions of the championship stipulated by the organisers to avoid any problems.
"I feel nervous when I found out that there are sports bodies that have yet to decide on the number of events they are competing in and hope they will do so immediately to avoid problems arising," he said.
He said that for this edition, the NSC was not going to hold a Centralised Training Camp as it used to do previously and would instead hold a final phase training programme from Nov 30 until Dec 5.
Malaysia will only compete in 21 of the 25 events at the SEA Games, namely aquatic, archery, athletics, badminton, snooker & billiard, boxing, cycling, football, golf, judo, karate, silat, petanque, sepak takraw, shooting, table-tennis, tenis, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting and wushu.
