KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- The Laos SEA Games Organising Committee (Laosoc) will hold a dry run of the opening and closing ceremonies, at the newly completed Laos National Stadium in early November, to ensure its readiness for the biennial games.
Laos Deputy Prime Minister and Laosoc Chairman, Somsavat Lengsavad said he had asked the Opening and Closing Committees to prepare a trial run of both the ceremonies for party and government leaders.
"When I report on the progress made by the organising committee at party and government meetings, I find people are worried about how the preparations are progressing because this is the first time Laos is hosting a sporting event of this magnitude," Somsavat said in the official Laos SEA Games website.
The new stadium, located at KM16, Saythany district, in Vientiane with a capacity of 17,000 seats, was handed over to Laosoc, last month.
He said he has been asked to show how the committee would accommodate thousands of people into the National Stadium and how it would coordinate the performances.
Somsavat also said all construction work on venues would be fully completed and events held to test the facilities before the SEA Games begins on December 9.
"All committees must witness the dry run together and see how each performed. If there are any shortcomings, they must be addressed before the games gets underway," he said.
Deputy Minister of Information and Culture, Bouangeun Saphouvong who is also chairman of the SEA Games Opening and Closing Committees, said the ceremonies will involve performances by thousands of people who are currently rehearsing for the show.
"We began rehearsals in May and will continue until next month. We are currently holding rehearsals at That Luang esplanade and various schools but hope to start practicing at the National Stadium as soon as possible," he said.
The SEA Games to held from Dec 9-18, will comprise 383 events in 25 sports, namely athletics, swimming, archery, badminton, snooker and billiards, muay, cycling, football, golf, judo, karate-do, sepak takraw, shooting, tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, pencak silat, petanque, fin swimming, diving and shuttlecock juggling.
