KUCHING: National diver Bryan Nickson Lomas and swimmer Daniel Bego are on track for a prominent podium finish at the Vientiane SEA Games in Laos this December.Although having no specific medal targets in mind, they are poised to make waves in the biennial regional meet.
Daniel, 20, will compete in five events – men’s 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly.
The A Levels student at Inti College Subang said his preparations were going well and he would intensify the pace next month.
“I won the 100m butterfly and 200m freestyle gold medals in the 2006 SEA Games in Korat, Thailand, and I will try to maintain that record.
“Of course, any additional medals would be a bonus,” he said at the Majlis Sukan Negeri Sarawak (MSNS) Sports Awards 2007-8 Presentation at the Kuching Civic Centre on Friday night.
Asked to rate his medal chances, Daniel replied: “I think they are pretty good but anything can happen, so I will have to be ready.”
He said he would not be taking part in more events as it would be very exhausting and that could affect his performance.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Bryan will be diving for gold in the 3m platform, 10m platform, 3m synchronised and 10m synchronised.
The Bukit Jalil Sports School student won a gold medal in the 10m platform in Korat. He will leave for China today to train for the Vientiane Games.
On his chances of striking gold: he replied: “Hard to say. I’ll just do my best to win medals for Malaysia.”
Byran said he was delighted about winning the MSNS Sportsman Award for the second year running.
“It’s not so easy, isn’t it?” he asked.
He thanked his parents, sisters, coaches, MSN Sarawak and well-wishers for their support all this while.
