Bego breaks second national record

DANIEL Bego sent a strong message that he is the favourite for the Sea Games gold medal in the most coveted swimming event -- the 100m freestyle -- when he smashed his second national record at the World Championships in Rome yesterday.

The 20-year-old Sarawakian rewrote Foo Jian Beng's year-old national mark of 50.94 seconds set at the Malaysia Games in Terengganu last year, when he clocked 50.86 to rank 78th among the best in the world. Jian Beng, who was also down for the event yesterday, managed a poor 51.71s to rank 95th.

Even so, the Malaysians were the top two among the Sea Games rivals contesting the event yesterday, signalling a possible return to power of Malaysia's 4x100m freestyle quartet in Laos in December.

The next best in that sense was Singapore's Nicholas Tan, who ranked 97th with a time of 51.83.
