Most Of SEA Games Infrastructures Near Completion

KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- More than ninety per cent of constructions of SEA Games facilities around Laos capital city, Vientiane, are near completion, according to the report by Laos SEA Games website, today.

The report on the progress was made during a meeting of the Laos SEA Games Organizing Committee (Loasoc) and the country's Deputy Prime Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Somsavat Lengsavad, last week.

According to the report, the new main stadium which can accommodate 20,000 people is scheduled to be completed by next month, four months before the biennial event starts on Dec 9.

Meanwhile, Laos National Sports Committee president, Dr Phouthong Seng Akhom said the main stadium would host 10 different events including indoor and outdoor sports.

"The stadium is the first international standard stadium in Laos and will also host the opening and closing ceremonies for the games," he said in the website.

He also denied rumour that the construction of facilities for the games would not be ready in time as the main stadium was now 90 percent complete and overall preparations for the games were 80 percent complete.

Other indoor and outdoor courts at Chao-anouvong stadium in Anou village, Chanthabouly district, the International Trade Exhibition and Convention Centre, Beungkhayong stadium and facilities at the National University of Laos were also close to completion and were waiting to have the sports equipment installed.

The 25th SEA Games will take place from December 9 to 18, involving 386 events in the 25 sports namely athletics, swimming, archery, badminton, snooker and billiards, muay thai, cycling, football, golf, judo, karate, sepak takraw, shooting, tennis, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, pencak silat, petanque, fin swimming, diving and shuttlecock juggling.
