KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 (Bernama) -- National high jumper Lee Hup Wei has booked a ticket to the Laos SEA Games in December after beating the qualifying mark set by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) with 2.22m jump at the International Athletics Competition in Shizuoka, Japan, Sunday.
Malaysian Amateur Athletic Union (MAAU) deputy president, Karim Ibrahim in confirming Hup Wei's jump in Japan, said the qualifying mark for the Laos SEA Games was 2.17m.
"With Hup Wei's recent feat, six national athletes have passed the qualifying mark to Laos," he told Bernama here Monday.
He said the five who had earlier qualified were Roslinda Samsu (women's pole vault), Yuan Yu Fang (women's walk), Noraseela Khalid (400m hurdle), Teoh Boon Lim and Ng Chee Seng (men's walk).
MAAU are hoping that Hup Wei's 2.22m jump would help spur him to try and qualify for the World Championships in Berlin (August) as the qualifying mark for the men's high jump at the world meet is 2.31m under Category A and 2.28m for Category B, he said.
He said though Hup Wei's achievement in Japan failed to match the national record he holds of 2.27m, at the China Athletics Open in Beijing, last May, it was no doubt a good start to the year.
The 22-year-old, from Dengkil, Selangor, had gained much success in recent years, winning the Asian Track and Field (ATF) Championships in Jordon (2007), SEA Games gold in Korat (2007), the Allcomers Meet and the Thailand Open last year.
