National coach P. Arivalagan, who confirmed this, said the names were endorsed by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) recently.
"Five of the exponents are medal hopefuls as they had won international tournaments and are consistent. But I hope others will try to create upsets," he told Bernama.
The five exponents are G.I. Yaaminii (61kg), Jamalliah Jamaludin (68kg and above), Mohd Hatta Mahmud (84kg), Shahrudin Jamaludin (67kg) and L. Kunasilan (60kg).
Arivalagan said he targeted six gold medals in kumite to equal Malaysia's performance at the Laos SEA Games two years ago.
Malaysian karate exponents bagged six golds in Laos two years ago and two golds at the Guangzhou Asian Games in December last year.
