Drought In Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Judo Federation hope to end their 30-year wait for a SEA Games gold medal during the 2011 SEA Games hosted by Indonesia from Nov 11 to 25.

MJF executive secretary I. Mariapan said Malaysia would be sending 16 judo exponents to Indonesia in an effort to make up for the disappointment at the 2009 SEA Games in Laos.

"In the past, judo has won silver and bronze medals but not a gold. It has been a long time. We hope the eight men and eight women judokas will be able to end that drought," he told Bernama here Wednesday.

The last time Malaysia won a gold medal in judo was during the 1981 Manila SEA Games in the Philippines.

Mariapan the identified judokas were currently preparing for the National Judo Championships in Kuala Lumpur on April 16 and 17.

He added that 19 exponents would also be competing in an International Judo Championships in Taipei, Taiwan in July.
